Henry McLeish (born June 15, 1948 in Methil ) is a Scottish Labor Party politician . After Donald Dewar's death , he was Scotland's second First Minister from late 2000 to November 8, 2001 . His resignation was a consequence of the Officegate affair.

From 1987 to 2001, Henry McLeish was an MP in the House of Commons for the Central Fife area . From 1999 to 2001 he was a member of the Scottish Parliament for the Central Fife region .

Officegate affair

During his tenure as a House of Commons MP, Henry McLeish maintained his constituency office in Glenrothes but failed to report to the House of Commons and to repay the £ 36,000 receipts.

The topic was brought up to the Scottish Parliament by the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party in April 2001. At that time, he paid the money back but remained under pressure. The Scottish National Party in particular questioned his integrity and called for his resignation. He fought against the demands for resignation with the argument that his misconduct was an accident and not an intention. On November 8, 2001, he gave in to the pressure and resigned. He was succeeded by Jack McConnell .
