Beatrice is an offshore wind farm in the United Kingdom in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland . The wind farm is named after the nearby Beatrice oil field . The first stage of the wind farm was implemented in 2007 as a demonstrator project with two REpower 5M turbines and had an installed capacity of 10  MW . The expansion, completed in 2019, was carried out with 84 Siemens 7 MW turbines with an additional output of 588 MW.

extension

The area of the extension covers 131 km². 84 Siemens SWT-7.0-154 wind turbines with a total output of 588 MW were installed. Each of these plants has a rotor diameter of 154 meters and a nominal output of 7 MW, a jacket foundation serves as the foundation . Each jacket foundation weighs around 1000 tons and is 80 meters high.

Once commissioned, the wind farm will provide enough electrical energy to supply 450,000 British households. The cost of the expansion was put at 2.6 billion pounds.

History and construction

The final investment decision was made in May 2016. In April 2017, the erection of the foundations began, which will be carried out by the installation ship Stanislav Yudin . The first jacket foundation was finally installed in August 2017. On December 24, 2017, 32 and finally 64 of 84 foundations were installed on May 15, 2018. The installation of the last foundation was completed on July 11, 2018. The construction of the turbines began on July 16, 2018. Development, construction and operation were led by SSE Renewables in a join venture with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Red Rock Power Limited.

The official commissioning of the expanded wind farm will take place in July 2019 by Prince Charles .

Network connection

The grid connection takes place for the first time via a modular concept with two offshore transformer modules that transform the electricity from the medium voltage level 33 kV to 220 kV and then conduct it ashore via two 90 km long export cables . Here the voltage is transformed to 400 kV in another substation.

Effects on UK Economy

In a study carried out by the wind farm operator and carried out by the consulting company NEF Consulting, the effects of the project on the British economy were examined. The study uses model calculations to determine that the offshore wind farm contributes around 1.13 billion pounds (equivalent to 1.23 billion euros) to the UK's gross domestic product. The project would create more than 18,000 full-time jobs, mostly in Scotland. In addition, around £ 34 million (around € 38 million) would go to community projects.
