Oggy and the Cockroaches (French title:. Oggy et les cafards ) is in France by French producers Marc du Pontavice and the animation studio Xilam (u a.. Lucky Luke produced) animated series . It's about a tomcat who struggles with three unruly cockroaches .

Production and publication

The idea for the series comes from Jean-Yves Raimbaud . The series was produced in France by the animation studio Xilam on behalf of ProSieben and also sold in the USA . In 2008 a third season was produced in France, so that there are now 195 episodes.

ProSieben broadcast the first season in Germany . After ProSieben canceled the series, Super RTL secured the rights to the series and backed the plot with rhymes spoken by Dirk Bach . The German version is the only one with a narrator who comments on the plot. The author of these verses is Eberhard Storeck , who already added this narrative to the series The Pink Panther . The 156 episodes of the first two seasons were summarized and broadcast by Super RTL in 52 blocks of three. Reps run at Nickelodeon Germany.

The first season has only appeared on DVD in France so far. A film adaptation of the series started in France on August 7, 2013. In 2017 the last season 5 was produced. She can be found on Netflix and has not yet appeared on TV. Season 5 consists of 26 episodes, each with 3 short stories. All together are connected with world history.

content

All episodes revolve around the daily arguments between Oggy and the cockroaches. The hunts almost always end to the disadvantage of both fronts; there are no real winners or losers. Usually it is the cockroaches that take the first step, but often enough they arouse the cat's displeasure without any action, e.g. B. when they eat the food in Oggy's fridge again. There seems to be a love-hate relationship between the four of them. In one episode (episode 22) Oggy is home all alone. He begins to miss the cockroaches so much that in his desperation he plays pranks on himself. So without cockroaches, his life would really be empty and empty. The cockroaches, for their part, are playing tricks on Oggy, but there are also episodes in which they support Oggy.

The fact that the figures opposite are also involved in Oggy's arguments with the cockroaches often leads to fights. However, these are usually not shown directly, but faded out, or the picture changes to other main characters who are witnesses of the brawl. The physical fights themselves are indicated by swirling clouds of dust and screams. As is usual with cartoon series, the damage suffered such as wounds or missing teeth disappeared in the following episode.

A running gag is the peculiarity of Oggy and his cousin Jack to take their noses off and to make squeaking noises. The similarity of the noses to clown noses underlines the comedy. This “multifunction” always comes in handy for the cockroaches for new pranks.

characters

Cats

  • Oggy is a lazy blue cat who lives in a large, luxurious house and goes about his favorite things to do all day long: cooking and watching TV. You can often see him doing typical housewife activities such as cleaning, washing or gardening. Otherwise you can see him chasing the cockroaches. He can shed his fur like morning or evening wash, which the cockroaches often come in handy for new pranks. Incidentally, his house is the only one in his neighborhood whose roof is painted purple, not red.
  • Jack is Oggy's cousin and visits him often, in some episodes he also lives with Oggy. His actions are always well-intentioned, especially when it comes to helping Oggy hunt the cockroaches. His hobbies are off-road vehicles and explosive chemicals. Usually he also hauls heavy artillery in the hunt for the cockroaches. Jack is in love with Oggy's sister Monika.
  • Monika is Oggy's sister who is always out for adventure and action. She looks like Oggy, with the difference that she has blonde braids that stick out on both sides and is constantly on roller skates . She often tries to convince Oggy, and especially Jack, to join her adventures. Jack usually only agrees to get an opportunity to propose marriage. Later Monika is actually with Jack.
  • Olivia is a white, beautiful and cute cat with a yellow bow on her head. She's the neighbor next door to Oggy. When Olivia moved, Oggy fell in love with her and he always tries to “lure” her. She can only be seen in season 4. In some episodes she likes the cockroaches and when Oggy crushes her she cries. There are also "special" episodes where Oggy marries Olivia.

The cockroaches

  • Joey is the head of the gang and the cunning of the three. It is often he who holds the strings in his hand while performing the pranks. He's also the most argumentative of them all and, if need be, messes with his buddies too. Joey has a purple body and face and two different eyes (one red, the other yellow).
  • Dee-Dee is the glutton in the group. Accordingly, he is overweight and his voraciousness is often his undoing. When he gets superpowered in one episode, he appropriately moves Oggy's refrigerator into his headquarters. Dee-Dee has a light blue body and an orange face and turquoise eyes.
  • Marky is the thinnest of the three and a self-declared womanizer. He's also very vain. In the prank actions, however, he tends to stay in the background. Its body is silver gray and its face is green. He's got red eyes and also dented antennae.

neighbours

  • Bob is Oggy's neighbor. He is a large, muscular bulldog with a spiked collar. Although he is a permanent member of the series, oddly enough, he does not appear in the opening credits. His hobbies are martial arts and gardening. His character fluctuates between indifference and irascibility. Bob or his house can be badly damaged during Oggy's hunt for the cockroaches, which is why both Oggy and his cousin Jack are beaten up quite often by Bob.

Minor characters

  • Rosalita Conchita is a rich and spoiled, but graceful millionaire's daughter who lives in a magnificent villa on the outskirts and often turns Oggy's head. However, it is questionable whether Rosalita is really into Oggy.
  • Sergeant Alfons Krause is a grouchy policeman who either patrols or directs traffic. Oggy often pulls him into mishaps, which he always "thanks" Oggy with a thrashing.
  • The pilot bumblebee appears in several episodes, where it stands by the cockroaches as a willing flying device. Characteristically, she wears aviator goggles and usually a leather cap to match.
