The lyrics of the Novelty Song , the first verse of which is a twelve-measure blues, referred to the then popular Grizzly Bear dance; Oh! You Beautiful Doll also refers to the earlier Irving Berlin song Oh, That Beautiful Rag , which also featured dance, fiddle music and ragtime . The refrain of Oh! You Beautiful Doll reads:

If you ever leave me how my heart will ache, I want to hug you but I fear you'd break.
