Oh Kyu Won (born December 29, 1941 in the municipality of Samnangjin in the city of Miryang in the province of South Kyŏngsang , † February 2, 2007 ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Oh experienced two traumatic events in his childhood: the Korean War and the death of his mother. This was accompanied by the experience of boarding school life and the constant change from one relative to another. During this time he was already reading a lot. On the recommendation of his family, he enrolled at the University of Education, practiced writing on the side and ultimately decided to pursue his favorite wish and devote himself to literature.

After completing his education studies, he worked as a teacher and studied at the same time at the law department of Dong-A University . In the period from 1965 to 1968 he made his debut on the recommendation of the poet Kim Hyeon-seung in the magazine "Modern Literature" (Hyŏndae munhak) and in 1971 published his first volume of poetry A clear case . For a while he worked in the publishing office. From 1971, Oh worked in the public relations department of T | aep | yŏngyang Chemical for ten years and published the first Korean PR journal “Cosmetics” with high-quality color photos. During this time he also published the volumes of poetry Auf Pilgerschaft (1973), To a Boy Who Is Not a Prince (1978) and Poetry to this Land (1981) as well as the anthology The Art of Love and the Treatise on Poetry, Reality and Self- Control ( 현실 과 극기 ). After finishing his work at Taepyeongyang Chemical, he ran Munjangsa Publishing House. In 1982 he began lecturing on poetry at the Art Department of the Seoul Art School. In the same year he was awarded the prize for contemporary literature . From then on he practiced his teaching activities parallel to poetry.

In addition to the poetry collections, my life would get more attention (1987), The World Beyond the Path (1987), Dungeon of Love (1991), Street, Alley, Hotel and the Rushing of the River (1995) and The tomato is red, no sweet (1999) he published numerous prose collections, anthologies of children's poems and poetological essays, including Rules of Modern Poetry (1990), a theoretical study of poetry that he wrote on the basis of his lectures and in which he analyzed specific case studies. In 1989 he was awarded the Yŏnam Literature Prize and in 1995 the Isan Literature Prize. In the early 1990s Oh traveled through Southeast Asia and in 1992 took a seminar on Korean literature in Germany as an opportunity to travel to Eastern European countries.

The experiences of those trips gave him the opportunity to change consciousness, and they were reflected in his poems. When he found out in 1991 that he was suffering from chronic emphysema, he followed empirical poetics from then on. In order to recover, he made friends with the idea of a rural life and took the view that poetry meant "not writing, but life". He spent most of the semester break in a country house in Suhu Village, Yangp'yŏng County in Kyŏnggi Province . From 2001 he taught his students the rules of poetry on the new university campus in Ansan .
