Ohad Naharin
Ohad Naharin (born June 22, 1952 in Kibbutz Mizra , Northern District , Israel ) is an Israeli dancer and choreographer.
Life
Ohad Naharin was born into an artistic family. He did not begin his dance training until 1974 at the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv and was brought to New York City to study by Martha Graham at the School of American Ballet . His next steps were the Juilliard School and teachers Maggie Black and David Howard. He has performed with the Israeli Bat-Dor Dance Company and with Maurice Béjart's Ballet du XXe siècle . His first choreographies were created in the USA in the early 1980s. With his wife Mari Kajiwara he founded the "Ohad Naharin Dance Company", which existed until 1990. Kajiwara died in 2001, he is now married to the Batsheva dancer Eri Nakamura (* 1984) and has a daughter with her.
Since 1990 he has been the director and creative head of the Batsheva Dance Company, for which he has written a large number of pieces that are quoted in his dance evening "Deca Dance". Together with the troupe he has developed a new movement language called Gaga . The adoption of this technology by other companies does not go smoothly.
In 1998 he was honored in France with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres . He received the Israel Prize for Dance in 2005 and is honorary doctorate from the Weizmann Institute of Science (2004) and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2009).
In 2007 the documentary “Out of focus” was shot about his work. The cameraman accompanied the work with the New York Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet for 5 days. In 2014, the production of the crowdfunded film “Mr. Gaga ”about the life of Ohad Naharin, which premiered in Israel at the end of 2015.
