OhmyNews is the grassroots journalism attributable Internet newspaper in South Korea , was founded on 22 February 2000 by Oh Yeon-ho . The name comes from "Oh my God". In 2004 the English OhmyNews International (OMNI) was launched, which only contained contributions from citizen reporters. In August 2010 this international edition was discontinued due to the abundance and breadth of the submitted contributions and converted into a blog about citizen journalism.

organization

41,000 registered OhmyNews citizen reporters contribute to the Korean edition. The editors review and publish around two thirds of them, an average of 200 per day. The 60 or so professionals, most of whom started out as amateur reporters, only write around 20 percent of the website's content, with over two million hits every day. Payment is based on the system of voluntarily rewarding good contributions. OhmyNews is funded by advertisements . Every Saturday OhmyNews prints the best articles as a newspaper .

reception

Founder Oh Yeon-ho sees a “ digital democracy ” thanks to the “marriage of technology and democracy” : First citizen journalism , the real fourth estate, end a time of “looking down from above”. OhmyNews is one of the leading voices in the country. It had decisively shaped the distance to Washington, DC , exposed scandals, such as secret payments to North Korea . Other South Korean media, some of which were closely linked to the rulers, could no longer ignore the corruption and had to open up to other issues. OhmyNews helped shape the election campaign of Roh Moo-hyun as South Korean President in 2002 ("the world's first Internet President"). Then he gave his first interview to OhmyNews.

Trends

On February 22, 2006 OhmyNews and the Japanese company SoftBank signed an investment agreement for US $ 11 million. A Japanese edition started at the end of August 2006 , a Chinese edition is planned.

With OhmyNews Japan, a Korean mass medium expanded to Japan for the first time. It started with a journalist known there and 22 employees, including 10 permanent reporters. It was hoped that 5000 citizen reporters would be there by the end of the year, in two years as many as currently in Korea, and cultural exchange between the two groups.

At the end of August 2008, the Japanese edition of OhmyNews ( Japanese オ ー マ イ ニ ュ ー ス , Ōmai Nyūsu ) had to be discontinued.

In July 2009, Oh Yeon-ho pointed to a significant loss for OhmyNews . The reason he gave was the advertising crisis and the breakdown of government subsidies.
