Lake Oku is a crater lake in the Cameroonian province of Nord-Ouest .
location
It is located in the Oku volcanic massif at an altitude of 2,219 meters above sea level and is one of the highest lakes in the Bamenda highlands and in all of Cameroon. The lake has an oval shape with a length of 2 km and a width of 1.4 km. It is located in the settlement area of the Fulbe and Oku peoples , to whom the lake is considered sacred. Lake Oku can be reached from Kumbo via the D102 road, or the P24 road from Bamenda to Fundong . The lake was formerly known as Mahues Lake , Mahuès Lake or Mauwes Lake . Otherwise, Lake Oku is considered little explored, although it was first described by Captain Hans Glauning at the end of the 19th century .

The lake is located in the nature reserve Kilum-Iyim Forest Conservation Area . Its banks are uninhabited and overgrown with a dense mountain rainforest . The bream Isoetes biafrana grows in the bank area , which is otherwise only known from Lake Moka on the island of Bioko . The surrounding rain forest, numerous rare find representatives of the avifauna , the endangered Bannermanturako ( Tauraco bannermani ) and rare representative of the primates , such as the Thomas-Galago ( Galagoides thomasi ) and the Preuss-tailed monkey ( allochrocebus preussi ). The endemic long-footed clawed frog ( Xenopus longipes ), known only from Lake Oku, lives in the lake , but it is threatened by infestation by the chytrid fungus ( Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis ).
