William High Keim (born June 13, 1813 in Reading , Pennsylvania , †  May 18, 1862 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . In 1858 and 1859 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Keim was a nephew of Congressman George May Keim (1805–1861). He attended Mount Airy Military School and later rose in the Pennsylvania State Militia to major general. In 1848 he became Mayor of Reading. He became a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 .

After the resignation of the representative Jehu Glancy Jones , Keim was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for the by-election for the eighth seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on December 7, 1858. Since he renounced another candidacy in 1858, he could only end the current legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1859 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

Between 1860 and 1862, William Keim was the Surveyor General in charge of the Pennsylvania State Land Survey. During the Civil War he was major general in the Union's army from April to July 1861 . He then left the army for a few months. In December 1861 he returned to the army as a brigadier general. Only a few months later he fell ill with typhus . He succumbed to this disease on May 18, 1862 in Harrisburg and was buried in Reading.
