From 1857 to 1858, Jehu Jones chaired the Committee on Ways and Means . In the elections of 1858 he was not confirmed; then he resigned prematurely from his mandate.

On December 7, 1858, he was appointed American envoy to Austria by President James Buchanan . He held this office until November 14, 1861. After his return from Vienna he practiced as a lawyer again. Jehu Jones died in Reading on March 24, 1878.
