Olaf Dössel (born August 17, 1954 in Lübeck ) is a German professor for biomedical technology and head of the Institute for Biomedical Technology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology .

Life

After studying physics, followed by a doctorate , Dössel began his professional career at Philips in Hamburg in 1982. In 1985 he became head of the measurement technology research group at the Philips research laboratory there. Under his direction, a new research area was established there: mapping of bioelectric currents with SQUID multi-channel magnetometers . In 1996 he was appointed to the University of Karlsruhe and has been head of the Institute for Biomedical Technology ever since.

research

Dössel is considered to be one of the most important experts in electrophysiological heart modeling and the creation of computer models of the heart. In addition to the cardiology heart modeling he also conducts research in the areas of anatomical modeling of 3D and 4D image data, the numerical field calculations in the human body and the ECG - Biosignal .

Teaching

At KIT, Prof. Dössel holds the lectures "Linear Electrical Networks", "Imaging Methods in Medicine I and II" and "Electromagnetics and Numerical Calculation of Fields".

Honorary positions

Dössel is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt . He is also a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , Member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts , Fellow of the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering (IAMBE) and member of the acatech - Academy of Engineering Sciences , where he is responsible for the field "Health technologies" played a key role. Since 2010 he has been editor-in-chief of the journal Biomedical Engineering / Biomedical Engineering. In addition, Dössel played a key role in the BMBF study on the situation of medical technology in Germany in an international comparison and, together with Wolfgang Schlegel, headed the World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering in Munich in 2009 . Since 2015 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Conference Computing in Cardiology CinC. He is the first chairman of the student dormitory of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) eV.
