Olaf Rank

Olaf Rank (born August 11, 1971 in Ulm ) is a German economist , university professor for business administration and management consultant .

Career

After high school and community service, Rank completed a two-year training course as a banker and financial assistant at Deutsche Bank AG . He completed his studies in business administration and economics from 1994 to 1999 at the University of Hohenheim and the University of Mannheim . At the same time he studied music with a major in singing at the State University for Music and Performing Arts Mannheim-Heidelberg .

From 1999 to 2003, Rank worked as a research assistant at the Chair of International Management at the University of Mannheim . There he obtained his doctorate in business administration in 2003 with the grade "summa cum laude". His dissertation , which was awarded the Klaus O. Fleck Prize from the Mannheim Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is entitled “Formal informal organizational structures: A network analysis of the strategic planning and decision-making process of multinational companies”. From 2003 to 2005 Rank worked as a senior assistant at the Institute for Marketing and Management at the University of Bern . This was followed by a position as assistant professor for international management at the same institute from 2005 to 2008. In February 2008 he completed his habilitation in business administration ("venia docendi") at the University of Bern.

Following his habilitation , Rank accepted a professorship for organization and management at the University of Göttingen in the spring of 2008 , while at the same time he turned down an offer at the University of Passau . In 2011 he finally accepted a call to the University of Freiburg for the Chair of Organization and Personnel. In 2014 he received another appointment at the University of Stuttgart , which he turned down.

Scientific activity

Rank works on the topics of organization , human resource management as well as strategic and international management . His specialty are methods of (quantitative and qualitative) network analysis for the investigation of structures and processes within and between companies. His scientific publications include three book publications as well as numerous scientific articles in national and international journals. He regularly presents his research results at national and international symposiums and conferences.

In addition to his publishing activities, Rank works as a reviewer for national and international journals and conferences. He is a member of several academic associations, including a. the Academy of Management , the Strategic Management Society , the International Network for Social Network Analysis (INSNA), the European Group for Organization Studies and the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration (VHB).

Teaching

Olaf Rank offers courses in bachelor, master and doctoral programs. He has also been active in the area of ​​executive education for many years. In terms of topics, his events primarily cover three subject areas:
