Olaf Rieck

Olaf Rieck (born October 15, 1964 in Lutherstadt Wittenberg ) is a German mountaineer.

Life

Rieck initially studied veterinary medicine and then worked at the University of Leipzig from 1990 to 1998 . In 1993 he was promoted to Dr. med. vet. PhD. In 1998 he left the university and has since worked as a freelance photo journalist and alpinist in Leipzig .

So far Rieck has climbed three eight-thousanders - Cho Oyu (1999), Gasherbrum II (2001) and Hidden Peak (2019). He also achieved two first ascent - Num Ri (2002) and Amphu Laptsa Middle (2008) - and a second ascent - Cho Polu (1999) - in the Khumbu region in Nepal . In 2005, he failed because of bad weather when trying to climb Mount Everest without additional oxygen. In addition to alpine projects, Rieck also undertakes extreme trekking tours, such as the south-north crossing of Spitzbergen in 2004 or the crossing of the Patagonian inland ice in 2009.
