Its north ridge is connected to the eastern part of the “ Lhotse Wall”. Neighboring mountains are in the east of the Makalu , north of the Shartse , themselves part of the Lhotse wall. There is a pass between Shartse and Cho Polu ( Col Hardie , 6183 m ). The southern neighbors are Num Ri and Baruntse , and Island Peak is to the west . The Cho Polu is located in the Makalu-Barun National Park .
Ascent history
The Cho Polu was first climbed on November 1, 1984 by the Spaniard Nil Bohigas . He climbed this mountain illegally (without a permit). This ascent was controversial for many years, but is now listed in Elizabeth Hawley's Himalayan Database . On November 12, 1999, Olaf Rieck , Dieter Rülker , Markus Walter and Günter Jung made the second ascent (over the north face).
According to information in a book by Jan Kielkowski , the mountain had been climbed three times via the north ridge before 1999. Norman Hardie was never on the summit according to his own contributions and never claimed to be. The summit photo of a Japanese expedition that announced the ascent in 1964 clearly shows the Cho Polu at some distance.
