The Shartse (also Junction Peak ) is a 7457 m (according to other sources 7502 m ) high summit on the border between the Khumbu region of Nepal and Tibet southeast of Mount Everest .
Due to its low notch height of only 187 meters, it is not considered an independent mountain. It is a continuation of the Lhotse - Nuptse ridge about 4 km east of the Lhotse Shar ( 8415 m ). The Shartse is located at a junction (hence the name Junction Peak ). To the east, the ridge continues to the Pethangtse and Makalu massifs. Another mountain ridge leads south to Cho Polu and Baruntse . The Kangshung Glacier flows in an easterly direction along the northern flank . The Lhotse-Shar Glacier lies on the southwest flank, and the Barun Glacier on the southeast flank .
Ascent history
The first ascent of the Shartse took place in 1974 as part of the German Everest-Lhotse Expedition . The German Hermann Warth and the Austrian Kurt Diemberger reached the summit on May 23rd. Following the mountain tour, Diemberger immortalized his mountain comrade Warth in a portrait with an ice-covered beard. The first ascent as part of the German Everest-Lhotse Expedition was given a special letter in Nepal.
