Olav Hohmeyer (* 1953 in Minden ) is a German economist and professor for energy and resource management at the European University of Flensburg .

Life

Hohmeyer first studied in the United States and then from 1975 to 1980 at the University of Bremen Economics . In 1989 he did his doctorate under Rudolf Hickel on the social costs of energy consumption. From 1982 to 1993 he worked in various positions at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research in Karlsruhe . From 1994 to 1998 he worked at the Center for European Economic Research in Mannheim. Since 1998 he has been working at the European University of Flensburg; there he is responsible for the energy and environmental management course .

Hohmeyer was involved in the preparation of several status reports for the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) . As Vice-Chair of Working Group III (Reduction of Climate Change) for the Fourth Assessment Report , he was the only German member of the Bureau of IPCC (2002–2008). With effect from July 1, 2008 he was appointed by Federal Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel as a member of the Advisory Council for Environmental Issues for four years . On September 7, 2009, Hohmeyer joined the future team of the SPD top candidate Ralf Stegner for the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein in 2009 .

In 2010, Hohmeyer pleaded for adhering to the nuclear consensus and decidedly against extending the service life of German nuclear power plants , which was decided by the German government in autumn 2010 and revised again in spring 2011 on the occasion of the Fukushima nuclear disaster (see nuclear phase-out , energy transition ).
