Oldřich Švestka

Oldřich Švestka (born March 24, 1922 in Pozorka , † June 8, 1983 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak journalist, communist politician and high functionary of the communist party KSČ . He is one of the best known proponents of the crackdown on the Prague Spring .

From 1945 to 1958 he was editor and from 1958 to 1968 and 1975 to 1983 editor-in-chief of the party newspaper Rudé právo , 1969 to 1971 editor-in-chief of the party magazine Tribuna . From 1971 to 1983 he was also a member of parliament.

From 1958 to 1962 he was a candidate and from 1962 to 1983 a full member of the party's central committee . 1963 to 1969 he was a member of the party's ideological commission.

In 1968 he belonged to the conservative wing of the KSČ and was one of those who signed the so-called letter of invitation to the CPSU , in which they called for Soviet interference. He supported the policy of so-called normalization based on conservative, neo-Stalinist positions.
