Old Rayne , formerly Rayne , Rane , Raine , Rain or Rayn , ( Gaelic : Raon ) is a village in the Scottish council area of Aberdeenshire . It is located around 35 km northwest of Aberdeen and 30 km southeast of Keith on the east bank of the Urie . The A96 runs directly to the west , which connects the town to the network of long-distance roads.
history
In 1492 Rayne was granted the rights of Burgh of Barony . The market cross of Old Rayne , which dates back to the 17th century and is classified as a monument of the highest Scottish category A, still testifies to this today . For many years the Lawrence Fair was held annually in Rayne on the Wednesday following the first Tuesday in August , a horse market of national importance. The bishops of the Aberdeen diocese who owned the lands maintained a residence in Rayne. This has since been given up. Burgh rights have also been revoked over the centuries. Today the timber industry is based in Old Rayne.
In 1851, 1550 people were still counted in Rayne. Last in 1971, the number of inhabitants was shown separately in the official census data and given as 109.
