history

The Oldenburg was built for Gideon George Menke and Hinrich Eylers from Oberhammelwarden and Hinrich Bulling from Schlüte . The maiden voyage under Captain H. Menke began on October 25, 1851. The barque transported 214 emigrants from the Weser to New York . Between 1852 and 1855 six more emigrants can be traced, including one to New Orleans . The longest trip was to Baltimore and lasted 62 days.

Shortly after leaving New York on December 21, 1856, the Oldenburg was caught in a violent storm in which a sea fell over the ship, "which washed away almost everything from the ship and filled the ship with 7 feet of water". The barque was badly damaged and returned to New York for repairs.

In 1856 the Oldenburg and other ships were taken over by the Oldenburgische Rhederei-Gesellschaft , which had just been founded . The Oldenburg was the only ship that was not built in an Oldenburg shipyard. After the takeover, four more emigrant transports to Baltimore, Quebec and New York can be traced, two of which took place during the Civil War . Due to the German-Danish War , the barque was flagged out to Russia and formally belonged to the Tilman Grommé company in Saint Petersburg .

In 1865 the Oldenburg was sold to Norway and renamed Genova . Home port was Lillesand . The Genova was first managed by HJ Hammer & Co., then by Krog & Henschien. In 1885 the barque was lost in the Baltic Sea due to unspecified circumstances .
