The Oldtimer Museum Volante was a car museum in Kirchzarten . After the sale of some vehicles and the abandonment of the museum, the remaining vehicles in the collection are exhibited in an event location.

The collection

The name of the collection comes from the Italian term for steering wheel = Volante. The collection shows vehicles specifically from the pre-war period. The focus was on luxury vehicles, which were manufactured by the French coachbuilder Vanvooren between 1900 and 1950. These were often unique pieces based on drive technology and chassis from Hispano-Suiza , Rolls-Royce , Bugatti , Voisin and others. With nine vehicles, this is the largest collection of these cars in the world. In addition to this specialty, there are other classic cars from this and the post-war period. There are also many unique pieces among these exhibits. 45 vehicles are currently on display, 12 of which can only be seen in Kirchzarten. About half are long-term loans from the owners. With the exception of the Bugatti 35A and the Brennabor ASK, all of the exhibits in the collection are ready to drive and are still regularly moved. The old Kirchzarten tennis hall, which was no longer used, was converted for the collection. This renovation took place from 2014 to 2015, so that an exhibition area of around 2000 m² is now available. The Mangusta restaurant - named after De Tomaso Mangusta - is also thematically integrated into the building with a conference area. You can see the exhibits directly from the restaurant through a large pane.

In addition to the exhibition of the classics, a special topic is dealt with every year, in 2015/2016 that is “Super sports cars of the 1960s and 1970s”.

Another focus is the thematic reference to the longest and most winding hill climb in Germany, the ADAC Schauinsland race , which was held nearby with vehicles such as a converted Delahaye 135 MS course.

The driving force behind this collection is Martin Waltz, managing director of the Volantes and former president of the German Automobile Veterans Club in South Baden. The trained human medicine and stone sculptor is co-owner of a medium-sized company in North Rhine-Westphalia. He also presents many exhibits from his private collection.

The following vehicles can be seen at the special exhibition "Super Sports Cars of the 1960s and 1970s":
