Oldwig Jancke (born November 22, 1901 in Sydow , Schlawe i. Pom .; Died December 5, 1960 in Stellenbosch , South Africa ) was a German biologist . His main focus was on plant diseases and pests in orchards and viticulture.

Fruit growing

Oldwig Jancke finished his zoology studies at the University of Greifswald in 1923 with a dissertation on brood care for some higher crabs . He then worked briefly in a Westphalian industrial company as a chemist and bacteriologist and as an assistant in the Prussian State Institute for Water, Soil and Air Hygiene in Berlin-Dahlem. In 1926 he went to the Naumburg branch of the Reich Biological Institute for Agriculture and Forestry .

In the biological Reichsanstalt, Carl Börner had resumed his work on phytopathology , particularly phytopathological biology, which had been interrupted by the First World War , and began to convert German viticulture to grafted vines . In the group around Börner Jancke worked on entomological questions in fruit growing. Starting with the Eriosoma Lanigerum studied Jancke numerous pests in fruit growing , including the cherry fruit , cherry Motte , Gespinstmotte , sawflies , aphids and others. Here, Jancke made in many areas pioneered so in the biological control of woolly apple aphid, the question of the relationship between fertilization and pest infestation, the resistance of certain varieties against mildew and the health risks of the use of pesticides .

Viticulture

After years of intensive research into pests in fruit growing, Jancke also turned to the problems of viticulture in the 1930s. On April 1, 1936, he was appointed head of the zoological department at the State Training and Research Institute for Fruit Growing and Viticulture in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. There he carried out intensive research on the single-string grape moth , crossed grape moth , springworm and green mite and developed a number of methods of combating them that were used for decades. In 1950 Jancke became director of the institution.

In May 1954, Oltwig Jancke suffered a severe stroke, which ended his professional activity. He was retired on August 1, 1956. In September 1957 he moved to Stellenbosch , where his son worked. He died there on the night of December 5th to 6th, 1960.
