Olefant also Olephant is a district in the Frankenforst district of Bergisch Gladbach .

history

The name Olefant takes up the old field name Olephant , which is contained in old names in Bensberg-Freiheit and Bensberg-Honschaft . In the early modern period , Olephant appears as a settlement name and is first mentioned in 1719. There are different interpretations of the meaning of the field name:

  • It can be a drinking vessel. The Middle High German "Olifant / olivante" (= horn of an elephant, drinking horn) refers to a medieval hunting and drinking horn made of ivory . Such vessels were used for drinking after the ducal hunt in the Königsforst was celebrated.
  • The spelling of the tub designation at Bensberg-Freiheit is Olephant . In Bensberg-Honschaft the spelling is Ollephant , with an "l" doubling. This gives rise to the possibility that a shrimp bakery located here is meant that used an oil pan. In the Rhenish dialect, oil is said to be ollich .

Mining

The Julien mine also extends around Olefant. In test drilling between 1966 and 1969, a deposit of around 1.5 million tons of minable zinc and lead ores was found here and an application was made for a mining and operating permit. After long negotiations with the mining authority in Siegen and the city of Bergisch Gladbach, mining was to begin on November 25, 1975 with a groundbreaking ceremony and at the same time the public was informed. That created unrest among the population. A citizens' initiative was founded, which had set itself the task of preventing future mining. The pressure became so strong that no further work was done. A notice of annulment was issued on March 22, 1977. The ore is still in the ground.
