Olive Mary Hilliard

Olive Mary Hilliard (nee Hillary) (born July 4, 1925 in Durban , South Africa ) is a South African botanist and taxonomist . Hilliard described 372 terrestrial plant species, the fifth highest number of first descriptions ever written by a scientist . Your botanical author abbreviation is " Hilliard ".

Life

Hilliard attended Natal University in 1943-1947, where she received a Master of Science and later a PhD.

She worked at the National Herbarium in Pretoria from 1947 to 1948 and was a lecturer in botany at Natal University from 1954 to 1962 . In 1963 she became curator of the herbarium and research assistant at Natal University in Pietermaritzburg . Her particular areas of interest are the flora in Natal and the taxonomy of Streptocarpus , Compositae and Scrophulariaceae .

In 1964 there was a professional and personal collaboration with Brian Laurence Burtt (1913-2008), who was instrumental in the revitalization of Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Garden . Their collaboration resulted in numerous articles and three books, Streptocarpus: an African Plant Study (1971), The Botany of the Southern Natal Drakensberg (1987), and Dierama: The Hairbells of Africa. (1991).

Her collected plants, mainly from the Natal Drakensberg and from Malawi , comprise about 8000 specimens (5000 of them by Brian Laurence Burtt).

It is found in Plectranthus hilliardiae Codd , Schizoglossum hilliardiae Kupicha , Cymbopappus hilliardiae B. Nord. , Agalmyla hilliardiae D. J. Middleton & SM Scott and Helichrysum hilliardiae Wild thought.
