Oliver Proske

Oliver Proske (born September 21, 1971 in Johannesburg ) is a German set designer, industrial designer, exhibition designer, producer and managing director. In 1998, together with his partner Nicola Hümpel , he founded the free Berlin theater company Nico and the Navigators .

Life

Oliver Proske, studied industrial design at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts in Dieter Rams' class and then at the Berlin University of the Arts . As part of his theoretical diploma thesis at the HFBK Hamburg, a free-form atlas was created in 2000 , which tests mathematical considerations for free-form dimensions, which make it possible to compare shapes with computer-aided styling .

Together with Nicola Hümpel , he founded the theater ensemble Nico and the Navigators at the Bauhaus Dessau in 1998 , for which he has designed all 25 stage sets since then. The company's headquarters have been in Berlin since 1999. Oliver Proske is also managing director of the company, which has been institutionally funded by the Berlin Senate since 2007, and has taken on the technical management of over 200 guest performances in more than 50 cities worldwide.

As artists in residence at the Sophiensælen in Berlin , he developed the cycle of images of man with the company from 1999 to 2005 . The production Eggs on Earth, which was nominated for the Berlin Theatertreffen and the Friedrich Luft Prize in 2000, gave the troupe its international breakthrough. The piece Where You Are Not , with compositions by Franz Schubert , marked the entry into music theater in 2006. Together with European co-producers, a number of other music theater productions were then created - including Anesthesia with music by Georg Friedrich Händel (2009) and Petite messe solennelle by Gioachino Rossini (2011). These alternated with collaborations between Nico and the Navigators with the Halle Opera and the  Handel Festival for Orlando (2010), the Deutsche Oper Berlin for Mahlermania (2012) and the Munich Biennale in collaboration with the Residenztheater for Die Befristeten (2014). The hour when we knew too much about each other was premiered at Kampnagel Hamburg 2015. In spring 2016 he developed the set for Philippe Boesman's Reigen in the new production by Nicola Hümpel at the Stuttgart Opera and in 2017 for the production Silent Songs into the wild at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. He has made guest appearances with Nico and the Navigators at the Wiener Festwochen , the Bregenz Festival , the Kunstfest Weimar , the Moscow Dom Muzyki, the Korean UIMT Festival, the Paris Opéra-Comique , the Festival Nuits de Fourvière in Lyon, the Opéra de Dijon , the Opéra de Rouen and the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg .

In addition to working with his company, he developed a. a. Stage design for the production Der Protagonist - Bajazzo 2011 at the Anhaltisches Theater , and for the concert for a deaf soul 2012 at the Puppentheater Halle. Furthermore, he designed various exhibitions - among other things, Things of the World (2008) in the Francke Foundations in Halle : A media installation based on the 300-year-old Wunderkammer as part of Theater der Welt and in 2012 the exhibition architecture for the sound art installation Cicadas in Hall. He communicates his design approaches in lectures and workshops at home and abroad.

Oliver Proskes most famous industrial design is the Melampos lamp. It was produced by the ClassiCon company from 2001 to 2007.

In 2013, about his work with the company, the photo book An der Erde der Mensch und auf him der Himmel was published by Theater der Zeit . In 2011 Oliver Proske received the George Tabori Prize together with Nicola Hümpel .
