Nicola Hümpel (born July 21, 1967 in Lübeck ) is a German theater and opera director. Together with her partner Oliver Proske , she founded the free Berlin theater company Nico and the Navigators in 1998 .

Life

After attending school in Lübeck, including in the music class at the Johanneum in Lübeck , Nicola Hümpel studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts . During her studies with Peter Raacke and Ann Wolff , she also attended set design seminars with Wilfried Minks and dramaturgy seminars with Udo Pillokat. In 1990 she took part in the stage class at the Bauhaus Dessau , where she met the director Achim Freyer and his work. From 1990 she realized her first video installations and performances in Hamburg. After graduating from the HfbK in Hamburg in 1995 , she staged her first play DenkVorGang in Dessau in 1996 .

Projects

In 1998 she founded the ensemble Nico and the Navigators with Oliver Proske at the Bauhaus Dessau . As “artists in residence” in Berlin's Sophiensælen , they and their company developed the cycle Menschenbilder from 1999 to 2005 . The production Eggs on Earth, which was nominated for the Berlin Theatertreffen and the Friedrich Luft Prize in 2000, gave the troupe its international breakthrough. The piece Where You Are Not , with compositions by F. Schubert, marked the entry into the world of music theater and opera in 2006. Projects led by GF Handel, JS Bach, H. Purcell and GA Rossini followed. In 2012 Mahlermania premiered at the Deutsche Oper Berlin to mark the opening of the “Tischlerei”. The next music theater project, Die Befristeten nach Elias Canetti, was created in 2014 for the Munich Biennale in close collaboration with the composer Detlev Glanert at the Residenztheater . Your work The hour when we knew too much about each other led the company back to its roots and was premiered as an independent production at Kampnagel Hamburg in May 2015. In the spring of 2016 staged Nicola Hümpel in cooperation with Nico and the Navigators at the Stuttgart Opera to dance by Philippe Boesmans. The piece was part of the "almost unrivaled premiere series" for which Stuttgart was voted "Opera House of the Year" 2015/16. In February 2017 the world premiere of her music theater production Silent Songs into the wild took place at the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles in Brussels. The staged concert based on the music of Franz Schubert was shown after its Berlin premiere at the Berlin Konzerthaus at the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie. In June 2017, Nicola Hümpel staged the indie folk concert In contrast to you at Heimathafen Neukölln .

In 2018 Nicola Hümpel celebrated the 20th anniversary of her company Nico and the Navigators in Berlin. In collaboration with the Kuss Quartet , the world premiere of Must it be? Was held in July 2018 as part of the Hitzacker Summer Music Days to the music of Beethoven . Yes it has to be! instead of. With their anniversary production The Future of Yesterday , the ensemble returned to their Berlin founding site - the Sophiensæle - in October 2018 . A wide-ranging program of symposia, photo and stage design exhibitions as well as discussion events provided insights into the history and methods of the ensemble. In April 2019, the dance of death project Nobody Dies in the Middle of His Life premiered at the Konzerthaus Berlin . With the betrayal of images, the ensemble combined architecture, drama, dance, sculpture and virtual images into a multi-layered aesthetic-spatial overall experience in autumn 2019 with the help of augmented reality glasses.

Nico and the Navigators have so far been seen with over 200 guest performances in a total of more than 50 cities worldwide. They guested u. a. at the Wiener Festwochen , the Bregenz Festival , the Handel Festival in Halle , the Korean Uijeongbu International Music Theater Festival, the Paris Opéra-Comique , the Kunstfest Weimar , the Opéra de Rouen or the Grand théâtre de la ville de Luxembourg .

From 2007 to 2013, the company received institutional funding from the State of Berlin - since 2014 they have had their own Berlin budget. On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of Nico and the Navigators, the illustrated book An der Erde hangs man and heaven hangs from him at the Theater der Zeit publishing house . In 2011 the Performing Arts Fund awarded the ensemble the George Tabori Prize . In 2016 Nicola Hümpel received the Konrad Wolf Prize from the Academy of the Arts .

In addition to working as an ensemble, Nicola Hümpel teaches her method of “guided improvisation” at several training centers, including a. at the Otto Falckenberg School , the Bavarian Theater Academy August Everding in Munich, at the Stuttgart Opera Studio or the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Waterloo.
