The Olivier Crocus ( Crocus olivieri ) is a plant from the genus of crocus ( Crocus ).

features

The Olivier crocus is a perennial tuber geophyte that reaches heights of 5 to 10 centimeters. The tuber does not have a long neck made of dead lower leaves. The 1 to 4 (rarely 5) leaves are 2 to 5 (rarely 1.5 to 7) millimeters wide, usually downy hairy and more spread out than upright. The two bracts are about the same size. The flowers are bright orange-yellow, sometimes they are pale yellow. The perigone measure 15 to 35 × 4 to 12 millimeters. The stigma has 6 to 15 branches.

The flowering period extends from February to April.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 6.

Occurrence

The Olivier crocus occurs in Macedonia, south-east Romania, south Bulgaria, Albania, Greece as well as west and central Turkey. The species grows on open rocky lawns and in loose woodland at altitudes of 150 to 1400 meters.

Systematics

There are 3 subspecies of the richly shaped Crocus olivieri :

  • Crocus olivieri subsp. olivieri (Syn .: Crocus suterianus Herb. , Crocus aucheri Boiss. ): The tuberous cover is membranous or has parallel fibers . The stylus are six branches. The perigone lobes have no stripes on the outside. The subspecies occurs on the Balkan Peninsula and in Turkey.
  • Crocus olivieri subsp. balansae (J.Gay ex Baker) B.Mathew : The tuberous cover is membranous or parallel-fibred. The styles are 12 to 15 branched. The underside of the perigone is usually streaked or overflowing with brownish purple. This subspecies occurs in western Turkey, on Chios and on Samos at altitudes of 450 to 1000 meters. However, some authors consider them to be a separate species: Crocus balansae J. Gay ex Maw .
  • Crocus olivieri subsp. istanbulensis B.Mathew : The tuberous shell is coarse-fibred, the fibers are weakly networked at the tip of the tuber. This subspecies occurs in northwestern Turkey in the Istanbul province at altitudes of 150 to 170 meters. Some authors consider them to be of a distinct species: Crocus istanbulensis (B.Mathew) Ruksans .

The Olivier crocus is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens and borders.
