Ololygon aromothyella ( Syn. : Scinax aromothyella ) is a neotropical Froschlurch from the subfamily of the scinax (Scinaxinae) within the family of tree frogs (Hylidae). This species was previously included in the genus Scinax and assigned to the Scinax catharinae clade. From 2016 this clade was listed as a separate genus under the name Ololygon .

description

Faivovich (2005) gives head-torso lengths from 20.3 to 24.8 mm for males (n = 28) and from 29.8 to 31.8 mm for females (n = 2). Characteristic of Ololygon aromothyella is the dark yellow color on the inner sides of the thighs and lower legs, robust but not hypertrophic forelegs, and the lack of a strongly glandular spot in the groin region. The species differs from other representatives of the Scinax catharinae clade mainly in that it has slightly larger front legs and differences in the sound bladder in the males. This is a little bloated on the outside. The species is closely related to Ololygon berthae and therefore the most difficult to distinguish from this sympatric tree frog. Compared to Ololygon berthae, Ololygon aromothyella has more robust forelegs and less webbed toes. In addition, the males of Scinax aromothyella are slightly larger (average 22.7 compared to 20.5 mm) and the few (n = 2) known females are much larger (29.8 and 31.8 compared to an average of 24.5 mm ). A photo of a male is in Borteiro et al. (2007: 98).

distribution

Until 2005, this species was only known from three localities from the Argentine province of Misiones and one from the Uruguayan department of Treinta y Tres . Prigioni et al. (2005) expanded the known distribution by about 750 km south into central-eastern Uruguay and Borteiro et al. (2007) another 150 km south to southeast Uruguay. Possibly comes Ololygon aromothyella in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and the neighboring Paraguay before.

Habitat and Ecology

Usually, Ololygon aromothyella occurs in open land, where it is found around permanent or semi-permanent bodies of water, especially during or shortly after heavy rainfall from December to February. Only two individuals have so far been found along a forest stream. Males usually call from the vegetation just above the water surface. The species has a larval development.

Danger

The IUCN lists Ololygon aromothyella as a data deficient because the species was only recently described and little is known about distribution and ecological claims. The species occurs in at least one protected area (Parque Provincial Piñalito).
