Oltmann Jaburg (born July 17, 1830 in Vegesack near Bremen , † October 22, 1908 in Vegesack) was a German marine painter and photographer .

biography

Jaburg comes from a Protestant seafaring family that has lived in Vegesack since the 18th century. Among his ancestors and closest relatives are numerous ship captains and helmsmen. He had been married since 1864 and had five daughters, four of whom immigrated to the United States. His abandoned grave was in the Vegesack cemetery on Lindenstrasse .

Training and works

The Bremer Bark Union , oil painting by Oltmann Jaburg (1860)

Jaburg learned the painting trade from 1844 on from his older brother Addig Jaburg , who was a successful portrait painter . During the summer season, the brothers stayed on the North Sea island of Norderney , where they made portraits together for spa guests. In doing so, Addig painted the head while adding the clothes and background. Some signed portraits are also known by Oltmann, but around 1852 he specialized in painting pictures of ships, the so-called captain pictures, while his brother Addig continued to paint the portraits of the ship's captains and their wives. He was also influenced by his friend, the marine painter Carl Justus Fedeler (1837-1897). His most successful creative period as a marine painter was between 1852 and 1864. With the advent of steam shipping and the associated emigration of the captains from Vegesack to Bremerhaven or Bremen, the number of orders gradually decreased and he opened a photo studio in 1864 without giving up painting. From 1885 he also worked as an innkeeper and meat inspector.

Jaburg occupies a remarkable position among the marine painters, even if he is not one of the "greats". The representation of the ships is precise and detailed, from their special features to the rigging, because the captain or shipowner wanted a picture of "his" ship and not a fantasy ship. His pictures are characterized by expressive power and artistic momentum in aerial perspectives, storm scenes, waves and backgrounds. While it was common to depict ships running to the left, Jaburg painted most ships to the right.

Many of the captain's pictures from him have been preserved in private ownership or in public collections. Some can be seen in the Schönebeck Castle Museum in Bremen-Vegesack, in the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven or in the Focke Museum in Bremen. Most of these have been depicted in the relevant literature. The portrait of pastor HA Zedler from 1894 hangs in the town church of Vegesack , while that of pastor G. Hartje from 1896 was unfortunately stolen. Most of his pictures are signed with O. Jaburg . His sketchbooks are in the archive of the Schönebeck Palace Museum.
