The track cycling sprint over 1000 meters at the 1908 Olympic Games in London took place on 16 July at the City Stadium White instead.

Each nation was entitled to up to 12 starting places. Each race consisted of approximately 1 2⁄3 laps of the 660 yard long track. The time limit for the race was 1 minute and 45 seconds. The competition consisted of three rounds (quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals). In the quarter-finals there were 16 runs, the winner of each run qualified for the semi-finals, provided he did not exceed the time limit. In the semifinals, the winners of the runs also qualified for the finals.

Victor Johnson had a flat tire shortly after the start and retired from the race. The remaining three drivers continued to fight for the medals. On the last lap, Clarence Kingsbury also had a puncture when entering the main straight . Benjamin Jones and Maurice Schilles drove to the end of the race, with the Frenchman Schilles winning by a few centimeters. However, since the race lasted longer than the allotted time limit, it was declared invalid. Much to the surprise of both spectators and participants, the National Cyclists Union refused to allow the race to be repeated. So no medals were awarded.
