The lightweight boxing matches at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin took place from August 11th to 15th in the Deutschlandhalle .

Course of the competition

In the lightweight division, the German Karl Schmedes was one of the favorites for the Olympic victory. Schmedes had already won bronze at the European Championships in Budapest in 1934 . However, he was eliminated in the first round against José Padilla from the Philippines.

There were also favorites falls in the second round. The reigning European champion from Italy Mario Facchin was eliminated against the 21-year-old Swede Erik Ågren . The Belgian Simon Dewinter also lost his round of 16 match against Andrew Scrivani from the United States after he had previously triumphed over the Austrian Alois Swatosch with a knockout victory .

So there was a fight between Scrivani and Ågren in the quarterfinals. Since the American made a few cuts around the eye area in the fight against Dewinter, he went into the fight with this handicap. Scrivani's cuts opened again during the fight, Ågren took advantage of this and made it to the semi-finals. There he met the Estonian Nikolai Stepulov , to whom he was defeated on points.

After Padilla had eliminated Czesław Cyraniak from Poland after Schmedes , he had to bury his hopes for a medal in the quarterfinals after a defeat against the Hungarian Imre Harangi . Harangi continued his winning streak in the semi-finals and eliminated the Dane Poul Kops .

In the final fight between Stepulov and Harangi, the Estonian had the better start and was able to decide the first round of the fight in his favor. He was able to cut Harangi over both eyes. One of these cuts was nearly four centimeters, which affected the Hungarian's eyesight. Despite these injuries, Harangi struggled and gained the upper hand from the second round. Finally, Harangi won on points and thus became Olympic champion.

Erik Ågren won the bronze medal without a fight, as Poul Kops did not start in the decisive fight.
