The welterweight boxing matches at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin took place from August 10th to 15th in the Deutschlandhalle .

Course of the competition

In the welterweight division there was no clear favorite in advance. However, it was expected that Michael Murach could perform well in front of his home crowd. Furthermore, Leonard Cook from Australia and Imre Mándi from Hungary were considered medal contenders .

In the round of 16, the victory of Mándi over the American Chester Rutecki caused a stir in the American team. Although the Hungarian hung on the ropes of the ring in the first round and was cautioned four times for fouls, the judges declared him the winner of the fight in the end. Because of this incident, the American boxing team withdrew from the Olympics, but reversed that decision an hour later. Another controversy arose in the first bout of the competition when Uruguay's Francisco Constanzo was disqualified in his bout against Frenchman Roger Tritz . Thereupon Constanzo's supporters surrounded the ring and threatened to cut the referee's throat.

The Finn Sten Suvio had little luck with the tournament tree , after his first round win against the Japanese Keikan Ri he met Cook and Mándi, who he was able to defeat. After another victory in the semifinals over the later bronze medalist Gerhard Pedersen from Denmark, he faced Murach in the final. Suvio was the outsider, but was able to assert himself against the German in the first round. The fight then took its turn in the middle of the second round when Suvio was able to set a hit at Murach with his right hand. The Finn began to dominate, putting hit after hit and finally won on points.
