The featherweight boxing matches at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin took place from August 11 to 15 in the Deutschlandhalle .

Course of the competition

Two big names were missing from featherweight. On the one hand the favored American Joe Church , who was sent home by the coaching team from Berlin for disciplinary reasons, and on the other hand the European champion from 1934 Otto Kästner from Germany, who had to cancel his participation due to a hand injury. Instead of Kästner, Josef Miner ran for the German Reich. Together with the South African Charles Catterall and the Hungarian Dezső Frigyes, he was considered one of the best boxers in the weight class.

Except for the fight between the American Theodore Kara and Felipe Gabuco from the Philippines in the first round, all fights were decided on points. Kara was able to advance to the quarterfinals after another victory over the Estonian Eval Seeberg , where he was defeated by Catterall. He met Miner in the semi-finals and was able to defeat him. Outstanding, however, was the Argentine Oscar Casanovas , who confidently defeated the later Polish European champion Aleksander Polus in the quarter-finals and celebrated another impressive victory against Frigyes in the semifinals.

The final should deliver a fight worth watching. Casanovas landed good hits at Catterall through a series of hooks and eventually emerged from the fight as an Olympic champion.
