The heavyweight boxing matches at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin took place from August 10th to 15th in the Deutschlandhalle .
Course of the competition
The heavyweight fights traditionally formed the highlight of the boxing competition. The field of participants, which consisted of 17 fighters, was top-class. A favorite to win the Olympic gold was Belgian Albert Robbe , who was described by an American newspaper as fighting three-quarters like a tiger and one-fourth like Jack Dempsey . However, he was already defeated by the Hungarian Ferenc Nagy in his first fight , whereupon the newspaper reformulated the description "stinks like a Gorgonzola cheese". With the American Art Oliver , who had served as Joe Louis' sparring partner , another title contender was eliminated in his first fight. His opponent was the young Swede Olle Tandberg
The coach of the Austrian Karl Lutz caused a stir . After the judges declared his opponent Ernst Toussaint from Luxembourg the winner, the trainer ran around the ring and tore out a large tuft of hair in protest against the verdict.
The German champion Herbert Runge defeated the Czechoslovak Rudolf Kus in his first round fight by knockout in round one. In the last sixteen he was able to take the Briton Anthony Stuart out of the tournament with a hard-fought victory on points and later reached the final without a fight, as his semi-final opponent Nagy from Hungary could not compete due to injury. In the final, Runge finally faced Argentine Guillermo Lovell . The final fight was very even in the first round. Towards the end of the second round Lovell went down after a hit, but was saved from a KO by the ringing of the bell. Runge kept the upper hand and secured the Olympic victory. Erling Nielsen , who was defeated by the Argentine in the semi-finals, secured bronze because Nagy could not compete in this fight either.
