The middleweight boxing matches at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin took place from August 11th to 15th in the Deutschlandhalle .

Course of the competition

The Canadian Irving Pease , who was considered the top favorite to win the Olympic gold, never entered the ring because, on the one hand, he did not weigh the necessary weight and was accused by the Canadian delegation of considering the trip to Berlin more of a pleasure ride perceive.

In the first round, Chin Kuai-ti was the first Chinese boxer to make his Olympic Games debut, which was a very short one. His opponent Richard Shrimpton from Great Britain knocked him out in the first round but was disqualified because he had not followed the referee's instructions before the knockout blow. However, this decision was reversed the next day.

With Lajos Szigeti , the reigning European champion from Hungary and the Olympic bronze medalist in the welterweight from 1932 Bruno Ahlberg from Finland, two favorites were eliminated in the round of 16. During the tournament, Henry Tiller, a Norwegian, made a name for himself, who defeated one national champion after the other and finally made it to the final with a victory over the Polish Henryk Chmielewski .

His opponent in the fight for the Olympic victory was the French Jean Despeaux , whose speed became the decisive factor and who secured the gold medal. The bronze medal was won by Raúl Villarreal from Argentina without a fight because Chmielewski did not run.
