The favorites before the start of the tournament were the Italian champion Ulderico Sergo , the reigning silver medalist of the European championship Stig Cederberg from Sweden and the American George Wilson , who was not allowed to compete in the flyweight division due to his heavy weight. All three boxers reached the semifinals, the three semifinals were complemented by Fidel Ortiz from Mexico.
In the first semi-final Sergo defeated Cederberg and moved into the final, where he met Wilson. With a height of 1.82 meters, Wilson was the taller boxer and thus had an advantage over Sergo.
