Olympic Winter Games 1936 / Bavarian curling
At the IV Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936, curling was presented as a demonstration competition for the first time . In contrast to the related sport of curling , which is particularly popular in English-speaking countries, the “alpine” form of this sport did not manage to be accepted as an official Olympic competition.
The ice shooting was carried out on February 9 and 10, 1936 on the Rießersee . The competitions were opened by Karl von Halt , President of the Organizing Committee for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games. Since no entry was required, a large number of spectators came on both days to watch the competitions in this sport, which is particularly widespread in the Bavarian and western Austrian Alps. A total of 52 athletes from three nations took part in the competitions. Austria had the largest contingent with 23 athletes, followed by Germany with 19 and Czechoslovakia with 10 athletes. Ice shooting belongs to the group of stick sports and is also known as ice stock sport. The teams traditionally call themselves Moarschaften to this day .
