Omanaia is a small settlement in the Far North District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located around 25 km south-southwest of Kaikohe and just under 7 km south of Rawene , a small village with a ferry dock at Hokianga Harbor . By Omanaia leading New Zealand State Highway 12 , the settlement with Kaikohe combines and west flowing Omanaia River to the settlement over.
history
In the 1830s, the Māori chief of Omanaia , Papahurihia , also known as Te Atua Wera , was the leader of a nationalist movement against the spread of Christianity around Hokianga Harbor . He was also one of the supporters of Hone Heke , who is considered to have triggered the so-called Flagstaff War (flagpole war) of 1845.
Education
In the settlement is the Omanaia School , where students in grades 1 to 8 are taught. The school was attended by 19 students in 2016.
