Omar Abdullah (born March 10, 1970 ) is an Indian politician of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC). He was Chief Minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir from January 5, 2009 to January 8, 2015 .

Political career

Abdullah comes from a real dynasty of politicians. His grandfather Mohammed Abdullah , the "Lion of Kashmir", was already the most famous figure of the regional independence movement during the time of British India. In independent India, he was elected Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 1948 to 1953. He then spent many years in Indian prisons and in exile on charges of treason. After his political rehabilitation he was triumphantly re-elected and was again Chief Minister from 1975 to 1982. Mohammed's son Farooq Abdullah , the father of Omar Abdullah, took over the management of the JKNC founded by his father and was from 1982 to 2002 with several, sometimes for years Interruptions to Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. In 2002, his son Omar Abdullah took over the management of the JKNC from his father. Omar Abdullah was temporarily State Secretary in the coalition cabinet of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1999-2002). After the 2009 general election in Jammu and Kashmir, he was elected Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. The 2014 general election in Jammu and Kashmir was lost for the JKNC (the main winners were the BJP and the rival Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party ), which is why Omar resigned from his post as Chief Minister.

Personal

Omar Abdullah is a Sunni Muslim, but attended (possibly under the influence of his mother, who is a nurse from England) the Christian-run, English-style Burn Hall School in Srinagar and then the Lawrence School in Sanawar near Chandigarh . He then attended Sydenham College in Mumbai , where he began training as a Bachelor of Commerce , but did not complete it.

There are two sons from his marriage to Payal Nath. Abdullah has been separated from his wife since 2011.
