Farooq Abdullah ( Kashmiri : फ़ारूक़ अब्दुल्लाह ( Devanagari ) , فاروق عبدالله (in expanded Arabic script ) ; born October 21, 1937 in Soura , near Srinagar , Kashmir, India) is an Indian politician.

biography

Farooq Abdullah was born to Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah , the "Lion of Kashmir". His father was the leading political figure in the Kashmiri independence movement, first in the framework of British India and later in the framework of the Indian state. Farooq Abdullah studied medicine at the Medical College in Jaipur . He is married and has three daughters and one son. His wife is a UK national nurse. At the instigation of his influential father, he was elected chairman of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) founded by his father in 1981 . 1982-83 he was Minister of Health in Jammu and Kashmir and from 1982 to 1984, 1986 to 1990 and 1996 to 2002 Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir State . The times were marked by political instability and violence due to the Kashmir conflict . Serious allegations of election fraud were repeated, and Jammu and Kashmir were repeatedly placed under President's rule . From 2002 to 2008 Abdullah was a member of the Rajya Sabha , the Indian upper house. In the all-India election in 2009 he was elected as a member of the JKNC in the Lok Sabha and was Minister for New and Renewable Energies in the cabinet of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from 2009 to 2014 . In the Indian parliamentary elections in 2014 he was defeated by his rival candidate Tariq Hameed Karra of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (JKPDP) in the constituency of Srinagar .

His son Omar Abdullah has in a sense taken over the management of the JKNC in the third generation and was Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 2009 to 2015.
