Ong Keng Yong

Ong Keng Yong ( Chinese  王景荣 , Pinyin Wáng Jǐngróng , born January 6, 1955 ) is a Singaporean diplomat.

Career

In 1979 Ong received a Bachelor of Laws from the National University of Singapore and in 1983 a Masters in Arabic Studies with Honors from Georgetown University in Washington, DC ( United States ).

Ong was Charge d'Affaires at the Singapore Embassy in Riyadh ( Saudi Arabia ) from 1984 to 1988 , followed by the position of Advisor and Deputy High Commissioner at the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur ( Malaysia ) until 1991 and Minister Counselor and Deputy until 1994 Ambassador to the Singapore Embassy in Washington. For the next two years, Ong was press secretary to the Singapore foreign minister and press secretary for the ministry. From 1996 to 1998 he was then Singaporean High Commissioner in India and in personal union Ambassador of Singapore to Nepal and 1999-2002 Chief Executive Director of the People's Association, which is subordinate to the Ministry of Education of Singapore. At the same time, Ong was press secretary to Singapore's Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and deputy secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts (MITA) from 1998 to 2002 .

On January 1st, 2003 Ong took over the post of Secretary General of ASEAN from Filipino Rodolfo C. Severino . The handover ceremony took place on January 6th in Jakarta , Indonesia . On December 31, 2007, Ong's five-year term ended regularly. He was followed by Thai Surin Pitsuwan . From 2008 to 2011 Ong was Director of the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. At the same time he was the Singaporean ambassador for Iran based in Singapore. This was followed by the office of the Singaporean High Commissioner in Malaysia until 2014.

In 2014, Ong took over from Barry Desker as Executive Deputy Chairman of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore. Ong is also director of the Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies (IDSS), which is part of RSIS. In addition, as Ambassador-at-Large in the Singapore Foreign Ministry, he has been High Commissioner for Pakistan , based in Singapore, since 2014 . Ong is also chairman of the Singapore International Foundation (SIF).

Awards

In 1997, Ong received the Public Administration Medal in Siber in Singapore and the Long Service Medal in 2002 . In 2008 he was awarded the Singapore Meritorious Service Medal , in 2007 the Friendship Medal of the Lao People's Democratic Republic and in the same year the Medal of Sahametrei of the Kingdom of Cambodia .
