Rodolfo C. Severino

Rodolfo Certeza Severino, Jr. (born April 27, 1936 in Manila , † April 19, 2019 ) was a Filipino diplomat who was Secretary General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) from 1998 to 2003 .

biography

After finishing school, he first studied at the Ateneo de Manila University . He later completed postgraduate studies in international studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies .

He then joined the diplomatic service of the Philippines and undertook numerous activities in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Department of Foreign Affairs ) as well as foreign missions true. Between 1967 and 1974 he was used in succession as third, second and first secretary at the embassy in the United States . After that, he was instrumental in the normalization of diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China involved and then served from 1976 to 1978 as chargé ( Charge d'Affaires ) to the Embassy in Beijing .

He was then from 1979 to 1986 Consul General in Houston , before he was Assistant to the Foreign Secretary ( Assistant Foreign Secretary ) for Asia and the Pacific until 1988 . After finishing this position, he was ambassador to Malaysia between 1989 and 1992 . Then he returned as Under Secretary ( Under Secretary of Foreign Affairs ) on Political Affairs in the Foreign Ministry back and was as such also for the ASEAN responsible.

At the 30th ASEAN ministerial meeting in Kuala Lumpur in July 1997, his election as General Secretary of ASEAN was recommended and later recommended by the heads of state and government. On January 5, 1998, he officially took up his position as ASEAN Secretary General, succeeding Ajit Singh . On January 1, 2003, Ong Keng Yong followed him after five years .

Later he was director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore . He also published the textbook Southeast Asia in Search of an ASEAN Community .
