Onno Poppinga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Onno Poppinga (* 1943 in East Frisia ) is a German agricultural scientist . He was a university lecturer in the Department of Organic Agricultural Sciences , most recently in the Department of Land Use and Regional Agricultural Policy, at the University of Kassel and co-founder of the working group for rural agriculture .

Life

Onno Poppinga was born as the son of a self-employed farmer in East Friesland and had three siblings. After attending school, he completed an agricultural apprenticeship . He then studied agricultural sciences at the University of Hohenheim with a focus on agricultural economics , agricultural sociology and agricultural policy . In 1973 he received his doctorate in Hohenheim with the dissertation Political Behavior and Consciousness of German Peasants and Worker-Peasants, with a special focus on revolutionary and counter-revolutionary movements and approaches . Jens Flemming wrote in a review of the paper published in 1975 with the title “Farmers and Politics” that it was not without informational content, but focused too much on the extremes in the party spectrum. In 1979 Flemming wrote that it still remains to be seen whether Poppinga's hope that self-organized farmers' organizations would represent radical democratic and socialist positions would come true. The “Working Group of Young Farmers” founded by Poppinga in 1973 in the Boeblingen district , from which the working group for rural agriculture later emerged, also takes up a large part of the text .

After being temporarily unemployed, he worked as a course planner at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg . In 1975, at the age of only 32, he was appointed professor of agricultural sciences at the then comprehensive university in Kassel. There he taught and researched in Germany's first and so far only department for ecological agricultural sciences. Even during his student days, he had been critical of the development of agriculture towards industrial production and had been committed to rural and ecological agriculture throughout his entire professional life . He takes a critical view of the development in the market for organically produced products, which is also developing into a mass market with practically industrially produced products, although he recognizes the advantage that these are inexpensive and easily accessible for everyone.

At first he worked in the AG Rural Development. In the department “Land Use and Regional Agricultural Policy” set up for him, he tried to work towards a dialogue between farmers and consumers. Between 1986 and 2009 he published a total of 62 issues of the journal “Arbeitserresults”. His writings did not correspond to the usual doctrinal opinion and were rather regarded as a theoretical organ of the agricultural opposition read secretly by the agricultural bureaucracy. As an agricultural historian, Poppinga did research on anti-fascist resistance in rural areas. He published the results in several books.

On April 1, 2009, Poppinga retired . His professorship was not refilled. In the future, the department is to cooperate more closely with the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen , which traditionally has little connection with organic agriculture. After his retirement, a book was created for Poppinga under the title “Gegenwind aus Ostfriesland”. In his book review, Bernd Hüttner describes the scientist as a well-known leftist and as a “partisan among agricultural professors”, an allusion to Wolfgang Abendroth , the founder of Marxist political science in West Germany.

Onno Poppinga and his wife have been keeping boarding horses as a sideline since 1979 . In his retirement he wants to make more contributions to radio and television.
