Windmill near Oost

Oost is a small town on the island of Texel in the Dutch province of North Holland . Oost consists of only a few houses and is about 1.5 km northeast of the larger Oosterend behind a dike on the Wadden Sea .

History and description

Oost has been settled for centuries and used to consist largely of farms, but fishing also played a role.

Behind the dyke runs a canal that is connected to natural waters north of Oost, which in turn are connected to the Rommelpot wetland in the center of the island. This area is called De Bol . The old polder mill Het Noorden is also located here . It used to take care of the island's drainage. The wind was caught with the four mighty blades, transformed into rotational energy and drove an Archimedean screw in the cellar . This pumped the water from the drainage ditches into some holding basins. These could then be drained at low tide with gates in the dike facing the Wadden Sea . The system went out of operation when the dike was raised in 1965. The drainage is now taken over by the Krassekeet pumping station. The mill itself was restored by the association Vereniging De Hollandsche Molen and is maintained by them. Only a remnant of the gates to the Wadden Sea can be seen on the inside of the dike.
