A former team member of the SLSS, Peter Varkoly, took over the complete further development. A short time later, the first successor version of the SLSS came out with the OSS 2.0.

In December 2005, the first comprehensive “school server developer conference” took place in Erlangen with developers from various free school servers in order to discuss common standards and future cooperation. Some of the results have been summarized in a separate wiki and should be taken into account in future school server developments. The latest version of the Open School Server adheres to many of these new standards.

Open School Server is available free of charge as a download version without any restrictions in terms of functionality, but then no support is granted.

The Extis company cooperates with various companies that offer educational IT solutions for schools and offers both paid training courses and support contracts for schools. The aim is to provide schools with a permanent contact person for their questions and problems. There are paid versions in different price categories that, depending on the price, include e-mail support or installation in the school. Training courses for administrators and teaching staff are also offered.
