Operation North

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The operation north ( Russian Операция "Север" - Operazija Sewer) was a secret operation of the People's Commissariat of State Security of the USSR , in which the families of Jehovah's Witnesses on 1 and 2 April 1951 to Siberia were deported.

Before the Baltic States , western Ukraine , western Belarus , Bessarabia, and northern Bukovina were incorporated into the Soviet Union , there were few Jehovah's Witnesses in the state. Most of them lived in the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic and the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic .

Because of their conscientious objection to military service , Jehovah's Witnesses were persecuted by the Soviet regime . The organization's teaching was considered anti-Soviet. Its members have been identified as potentially dangerous elements. In November 1950, Viktor Abakumov presented Joseph Stalin with a draft to deport Jehovah's Witnesses to Siberia . Stalin confirmed the plan.

In April 1951. "all members of the anti-Soviet underground organization that leads an active subversive work" were in the Siberian and North Russian Rajons Ukhta , Dudinka , Magadan , Irkutsk Oblast and Tomsk Oblast reported. A total of 8,576 people or 3,048 families.

All restrictions were lifted by a decree of September 30, 1965.
