Opuntia apurimacensis is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet apurimacensis means 'native to the Apurimac Valley (Peru)'.

description

Opuntia apurimacensis has a shrubby growth, is semi-creeping to erect and reaches heights of growth of up to 1 meter. The shoot sections, which are somewhat pointed at their tips, are 15 to 20 centimeters long, 6 to 10 centimeters wide and 1 to 2 centimeters thick. The oval to circular areoles on it sit on small bumps. The brownish yellow glochids are up to 3 millimeters long. The one or two thin, protruding, straight thorns are whitish. They are 3 to 7 millimeters long.

The lemon-yellow flowers reach a length of 6.5 to 7 centimeters. The bright red or greenish yellow fruits are up to 6 inches long.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia apurimacensis is common in the Peruvian region of Apurímac .

It was first described as Platyopuntia apurimacensis in 1981 by Friedrich Ritter . Richard Crook and Roy Mottram placed the species in 1995 in the genus Opuntia .
