Opuntia azurea is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Opuntia azurea grows compactly like a dwarf tree, is upright and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters. There is a trunk. The glaucous greenish blue, circular to obovate shoot sections are 10 to 15 centimeters long and have the same diameter. The numerous glochids are dark. The one to three unequal, somewhat spreading thorns are 2 to 3 centimeters long and are almost black when old.
The flowers are bright yellow. The red, egg-shaped to spherical, thornless fruits are edible.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.
Distribution and systematics
Opuntia azurea is common in the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí , Zacatecas , Durango and Aguascalientes .
The first description was in 1909 by Joseph Nelson Rose . A nomenclature synonym is Opuntia violacea var. Azurea (Rose) Lodé (1996, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3, 43.1).
