Opuntia bravoana is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the Mexican botanist and cactus specialist Helia Bravo Hollis .

description

Opuntia bravoana grows shrubby with upright shoots, is richly branched from the base and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters and a diameter of up to 2 meters. The green, slightly purple-tinged near the areoles , glabrous or somewhat papillate, initially elongated and later egg-shaped shoot sections are up to 36 centimeters long and up to 14 centimeters wide. The conical, reddish, up to 3 millimeter long leaf rudiments on it quickly become obsolete, the short glochids yellow. The up to five yellow to gray thorns are formed on old areoles, but are often completely absent. They are flattened, sometimes twisted, occasionally bent downward, and up to 4.5 inches long.

The yellow flowers are reddish and have a length of up to 8 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia bravoana is widespread in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, south of La Paz .

It was first described in 1933 by Edgar Martin Baxter .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
