Opuntia cochabambensis is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet cochabambensis indicates the site in the department of Cochabamba in Bolivia.

description

Opuntia cochabambensis grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of up to 1.2 meters. A distinct trunk is formed. The flat, elongated shoot sections are up to 30 inches long and 4 to 5 inches wide. The areoles are white, the glochids yellow. The three to five needle-like thorns lying on the shoot surface or spread out are whitish and reach a length of 2 to 3 centimeters.

The wheel-shaped lemon-yellow flowers are up to 5 centimeters long. The purple-colored fruits reach a diameter of up to 3 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia cochabambensis is widespread in the Bolivian department of Cochabamba at altitudes of 2500 to 2900 meters.

It was first described in 1953 by Martín Cárdenas .
