Opuntia curassavica is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species refers to the Caribbean island of Curaçao , where the type specimen was found .

description

Opuntia curassavica grows as a shrub with often creeping or hanging branches. The oval to elongated, noticeably flattened shoot sections are light green, 2 to 5 centimeters long and quite thick. The small leaves fall off early. The small areoles have white wool and hair . Glochids develop late. The 4 to many needle-like thorns are yellowish and turn whitish with age. They are up to 2.5 inches long.

The yellow flowers are reddish in color and up to 5 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Opuntia curassavica is common in the Lesser Antilles , Colombia, and Venezuela .

The first description according to the rules of binary nomenclature was in Species Plantarum as Cactus curassavicus by Carl von Linné . Philip Miller assigned it in 1768 to the genus Opuntia established by him .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. low risk led. The future development of the populations is unknown.
